about

This is a collection of remixes created by August Traeger / Odd Person.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ve created a lot of remix tracks for friends and fellow artists throughout the years. This compilation collects some of what I consider the better ones.

My general approach to remixing is to not listen to the original track if I haven’t heard it already. I usually sift through the tracks that are sent for the remix and pick out sounds and elements that I like. This usually inspires me to head in some direction with the track. From there I sequence audio snippets and/or feed pieces into max/msp or into my sampler and go about creating a track as I would as if it were my own. This is why I prefer to call what I do “reconstructing” rather than remixing.

Track list & notes below. Please follow links to the original artists if any of these interest you.

DEAD WISCONSIN
This is a remix of one of my own tracks which is something I like to do frequently. It's a cathartic way to destroy something I've been working on. The distorted guitars on this were all processed through my hardware filter. I think that with the chopped, vocoded vocals made this a fun sunny version of the depressing original. Perfect for those summer bummer days.

AT THE SECOND PATH
I’ve done several remixes for Fire-Toolz over the years. This is the first of three that appear on this compilation. The first half of this one is a laid back summer beach day. The second half is a black metal pool party. It’s a fun one.
Originals are from several places. So just check out Fire-Toolz : fire-toolz.bandcamp.com/music

MARIO'S MILK
This was a pretty-straightforward remix for me. Take pieces of the original and process and sequence it. Only thing of note is the pads came from the new sampling synth I’d received. I think I took some line-level hum buzzing from the original and made the pad sounds with it. So that's interesting if you're boring like me.

JINX7
I went minimal, mellow, and dubby on this one. Don’t remember much about it really. But I like it.

YELLOW CROC FIRE / OOZE FLIRT
This was the first Fire-Toolz remix I did, from their first album. The mix on this one really came out crap though. I had just moved to a new house and didn’t have the studio set up yet. As soon as I heard the coughing and hacking in the vocal take I knew I had to use that as the main element to build the track around. Get oozy and flirty with this.
Original by Fire-Toolz but the first album isn't on bandcamp so listen to some other remix albums : fire-toolz-other.bandcamp.com

CREEP
I made a butthole surfers remix tape once. this is from that tape. the link to the original remix tape is below. You can find the original song on the internet if you want. I believe in you.

SLIP
Autechre has been one of my favorite artists for many years. This remix came about as part of an Amber remix project. I selected this track because it is my least favorite track of theirs. I tried to keep it pretty straight-forward and incorporate a lot of the dubby delay stype stuff they did a lot at that time. Eventually it turns inside out.

IMAGINARY DOORS IN GARLOZ
this was created for a Rygar (NES Game) inspired compilation that was never released as far as I’m aware. Rygar was one of my favorite games when I was a kid; a great sci-fi / greek mythology inspired adventure. For this track I took inspiration from the many graphical glitches I used to encounter in the game. One time I saw a door floating out in the water. I spent days trying to figure out how to reach this secret space. I think it was just a glitch though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

LUNGS
The original track has a lot of hissy, airy, reverb type sounds in it. I decided to base my remix around that. I singled out a lot of those sounds, amplified noise floor and reverb tails to use as the base elements for the mix. It will leave a hazy blur in your lungs.

THE STEP IN YOU NOW
Another Fire-Toolz remix. For this one I took parts that I liked from two different tracks. I liked the bouncy melody line mixed with the vocals from the other track. This is a happy song about someone who is a demon.
